The university library is a source of culture and wisdom, so its study is very important and its performance cannot be seen in isolation, but rather it pays tribute to the realization of an adequate development of the teaching-educational process. The article addresses the importance of the university library for the development of higher education, as an inexhaustible source of knowledge that fulfills the mission of making the information of its collections accessible to its university community. Functions that have been carried out in this institution since its emergence in the twelfth century to the present, with the incorporation of information technologies and communications, are highlighted. It is evident not only its relevance for the support to teaching and research, but as a determining institution in the cultural development of its users.
