Abstract

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are a booming field. However, there needs to be more information to address their economic valuation in agricultural production systems. A bibliographical analysis was conducted of the concept, its evolution, and its different fields of action. A state-of-the-art review was developed on the economic valuation of alternatives considered within the term NbS as a process to solve problems in different human activities, focusing on the agricultural sector. It is demonstrated that the NbS concept is relatively new with an increasing number of publications in 2015 in multiple and correlated areas. In addition, the economic valuation approaches are equally diverse depending on the type of solution, scale, or field of application. It is necessary to broaden the field of study of the NbS economic valuation focused on the agricultural sector, which considers viable alternatives for sustainable development, conservation processes, and productivity improvement in the agricultural sector.
