Avistamentos de Orcinus orca (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cetartiodactyla: Odontoceti: Delphinidae) no Pacífico da Costa Rica (1990-2020)

Resumo

As orcas são cetáceas pouco estudadas nos trópicos e seus deslocamentos pelas águas da Costa Rica têm sido escassamente abordados. São animais de grande importância ecológica devido ao seu papel de predadores alfa, e documentar sua presença no país pode ser de grande importância científica e social, pois para as comunidades costeiras esta informação poderia representar uma grande oportunidade do ponto de vista do ecoturismo. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo sintetizar e sistematizar os relatos existentes a respeito das orcas no país, por meio de publicações científicas, livros e informações oriundas de relatórios de cidadãos. Foram consideradas as informações coletadas até 31 de dezembro de 2020. Os avistamentos e o número de orcas no Pacífico da Costa Rica foram divididos regionalmente: 17 avistamentos e 56 indivíduos no Pacífico Sul, 7 avistamentos e 20 indivíduos no Pacífico Norte, 3 avistamentos e 19 indivíduos no Pacífico Central e 4 avistamentos e 10 indivíduos na Isla del Coco. Houve 31 avistamentos e 105 indivíduos no total.  Não foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas na ocorrência de orcas entre as zonas, embora haja um maior número de relatos no Pacífico Sul, especialmente durante o mês de setembro. Estudar a presença das orcas no país, envolvendo processos de educação ambiental e ciência cidadã, pode fornecer ferramentas importantes para a formulação de políticas públicas que permitam a conservação efetiva dos cetáceos e ofereçam maiores oportunidades de crescimento para a indústria do ecoturismo no litoral.
