Abstract

The purpose of the present work was to find alternative uses for agricultural wastes.

Acetylation of cellulose from pineapple peel, rice peel and saw dust was performed.
The acetylation reaction was carried out with acetic anhydride, acetic acid and sulfuric acid as catalyst.
Products with yields between 46% and 74% and a substitution degree of 2.4 – 2.7 were obtained.
The IR spectra of these products were similar to the industrial one. They have good solubility in acetone-water mixtures and the softening temperatures were lower than for the industrial acetate.
The cellulose from pineapple waste gave the best results.
