Abstract

The area around Puriscal, Costa Rica, is highly affected by different types of mass wasting processes: Erosion, superficial landslides and a very huge landslide of more than 60 has., partly inside the city of Puriscal itself.

In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of the rainfall and we concluded that neither the rainfall quantities nor the rainfall intensities reach important magnitudes which can provoke these phenomenons.
In the case of the largest Puriscal landslide, we determined as the most critical period September and October, because of the relatively high rainfall quantities and because of the high probability of long duration rain storms (“temporales”).
