La profesión veterinaria es una de las más antiguas del mundo civilizado y de las más viejas tradiciones humanas.
Posiblemente coincidió en un principio con el ejercicio de la medicina humana en la persona o grupos de personas que la practicaban, pero a lo largo de la historia se separó en un cuerpo de doctrina propio, procedente del tronco común de las ciencias aplicadas, y se especializó y se diversificó hasta constituir el ejercicio de una profesión y de una tecnologla.
